Lasik surgery vs. Traditional eyeglasses

UNITED STATES — Medical science and technology has reached an all-time high. Age-old ailments like myopia, hyperopia and other conditions can now be treated with painless surgeries. One of these technologies is called Lasik. It is the treatment of your eyes to achieve perfect vision through laser technology.

Advantages and disadvantages of traditional glasses

Prescription glasses have been used for centuries. These glasses are available in the market at extremely reasonable prices, in various models, colors and qualities. Eyewear companies like Overnight Glasses, Warby Parker, Glasses USA, Eye Buy Direct offer very easy services such as same day delivery, new lenses for old frames, emergency glasses service, etc. In addition to these attributes, the glasses are trustworthy because they are placed above your nose at a certain distance from your eyes and do not directly interact with your eyes.

Glasses also look fashionable. Today, designer glasses like Prada or Aviators are very well known and very loyal to the brand. Eyeglasses are available in photosynthetic, multi-tint, blue light filtered, plastic or glass options and a wide range of sunglasses. Traditional glasses are economical too much. A quality pair of glasses can be purchased for $ 20 to $ 50.

Unlike the advantages mentioned above, there are also some shortcomings associated with glasses. For example, glasses are breakable, so you should be very careful when wearing them. Sports and exercise are no fun with glasses. In addition, fog, rain and humidity make it extremely difficult to see through glasses. In addition, regular cleaning is essential because if the surface of your glasses develops scratches, it makes your vision blurry.

For some people, it is easy to adjust to a routine with glasses, while others find wearing glasses to be socially limiting. Let me clarify another important fact that prolonged use of glasses does not weaken your eyesight. Nonetheless, if you think that using prescription glasses can help your vision reach 20/20, you might be wrong. However, some fruits and foods are helpful like almonds, walnuts, carrot, fennel, etc., and some vitamin supplements like vitamin E, omega 3 are also helpful. The environment you live in also affects your eye health. Stress, smoking, lack of sleep, excessive use of blue screens are some of the concerns regarding eye health.

The pros and cons of Lasik

Our eyes are one of the most sensitive organs in our body. It goes without saying that you need to be extremely careful before making any decisions regarding your eye health. Lasik surgery is a relatively new technology, and little data is available to directly understand and speculate on its long-term side effects in the human eye. This procedure is also evolving and new technologies make it safer and more reliable, for example the use of Wavefront LASIK.

On the other hand, the benefits are innumerable, extremely lucrative and quite convincing. For example, after having LASIK surgery, you would not need to wear eyeglasses; you can play all kinds of sports, do strenuous physical activities, drive more carefully, enjoy the rain and much more.

In addition, there is another rather important factor to consider, namely “the cost”. LASIK treatments don’t come cheap. A typical procedure can cost you between $ 1000- $ 3000 per eye. You could end up paying more at once for LASIK than you would have spent on eyeglasses in your entire life.

Certain conditions like your age, corneal thickness, autoimmune diseases and others cannot undergo LASIK treatment. The success rate is only 90% in the past two decades, and there are cases in which patients complain of blurred vision at night or poor eyesight a few years after treatment. Some other minor side effects like dry eyes, glare, and halos around bright light can also occur. In short, there is no guarantee of how long LASIK will last or how your body might behave with this procedure.

Other options:

There is another alternative to corrective lenses and LASIK. This is called contact lenses. You may not want to undergo the LASIK procedure due to its unpredictable results, affordability, or associated health risks, and at the same time you don’t want to continue with traditional glasses. In such cases, contact lenses are the most suitable option. These are not too expensive and safe to use.

Learning to put on and take off contact lenses can be tricky, but you can adapt quickly. Sometimes redness, eye infections, or irritation may also occur. Contact lenses should not be used in windy and dusty weather. However, these should be used after doctor’s advice and care when using them.

Patients with eye problems:

If you suffer from certain eye conditions like myopia or ant stigmatism, the traditional LASIK procedure is not for you. The reason is that traditional LASIK cannot treat higher order aberrations and distortions. Nonetheless, wavelength LASIK or traditional eyeglasses are still an option for you. The initial consultation with a doctor and careful investigation can help you make an informed decision about your custom or standard LASIK procedure or prescription glasses.

Most appropriate decision:

Whether it’s contact lenses, LASIK (standard or wavefront), or traditional eyeglasses, every decision should be made in consultation and carefully considering all available options and the associated risks. Since LASIK is an irreversible procedure, the decision to undergo this treatment must be made correctly.

My preference

I have been using eyeglasses for ten years and feel quite comfortable with them. These glasses give your overall appearance a unique look. Eyeglasses or sunglasses become part of your attire after a while. According to my preferences, prescription glasses are fashionable, safe, risk-free and economical. This is why I prefer traditional glasses rather than complex laser treatment for the extremely sensitive part of my body.
