LAS VEGAS – Optometrists should be aware of the current concern over the overprescription of opiates, Marc D. Myers, DO, FAAO, Coatesville VA Medical Center, Vision Expo West told.

“It’s not that optometrists have a history of overprescribing opiates, but there is now concern with the opioid crisis in our country,” Myers said.

“We have many options for treating eye pain — acute, chronic, and post-surgical pain — which are ophthalmic options,” he said. “We reserve the use of opioids for patients who do not respond well to over-the-counter or ophthalmic options.”
